Ooh interesting! I’ve often headcanoned Austria to be very interested in and educated on the topic of psychology. I can actually see him having enough knowledge and skill to become a psychologist if he wanted to.

One thing I’d love to expand on is how this factors into sexuality! I’m going to refer to Austria’s sexuality within his (more or less) canon relationship with Hungary so I apologize if that breaks any shipper’s hearts.

So! When we’re talking about anal retentive personalities and erogenous zones, there’s also the topic of what makes the erogenous zone pleasurable to the person. The, uh, anus is the site of these sexual needs and thus, ahem, “elimination” is considered to be the form of release needed to satisfy the personality sexually.

And that’s kind of what I see Hungary functioning as for Austria, a form of release. We all know their relationship is built on the “Uptight Loves Wild” trope and we’ve seen that Austria allows himself to relax, i.e. let go, when he’s with Hungary. 

Think back to the Hetaween event where Austria spends the whole night being dragged around by Hungary in a skirt even though he’s super embarrassed. Considering how Austria reacts to Germany in the latest Hetaween when they’re trying to decide on a costume for him, we know Austria is easily embarrassed when it comes to his appearance and is sensitive about it in general. 

My point is that Austria would not just let himself be in a prolonged, humiliating situation… unless the person he’s with enables him to give up some of that control and get rid of all that tension.

Now this is all very gross and kind of silly but hey, I didn’t make it up, Freud did. 

Also, would you be willing to make this into a series where you exam other Hetalia characters in the context of Freud’s stages? I know you have a lot of requests all the time so don’t feel pressured or anything, I just love psychology and talking about it is fun!
