Q & A

Since when was Canada and Romano best friends?
Apart from the brief encounter when Canada asks Romano about independence,
there has been no interaction that shows them as friends. In fact, isn’t Romano
one of the ones who forgets Canada unlike his brother, Veneziano? I know he’s
friends with America, but only acquaintances with Canada, or an I missing
something?

They’re not friends? I’m
as confused as you. Like you said, they had that interaction in WS where Canada
asked Romano how he had gained his independence [x].

image

Not exactly. I think you’re
referring to the Christmas 2011 event. Veneziano recognizes Canada but we don’t
get to see Romano’s reaction [x].

image

do you believe that
monaco and france are siblings the way that norway and iceland are? like…
biologically (even though biology and nations is an iffy thing lol)

image

It is an iffy thing lol. I’m still in the process
of putting together a model, but to avoid a slippery slope, Himaruya has made
it so that descendants aren’t necessarily biologically related (e.g., Bulgaria
and Romania aren’t considered to be Rome’s grandsons, even though Romania
strongly insists otherwise).

Anyways, as for your question, no. Monaco is referred to as his protégé in a
volume 4 character note [x], although I’ve seen printed English translations where she’s referred to as his sister in the same note…

In Volume 6, she’s referred to as his “kind-of sister.”

She and Italy refer to France as big brother;
however, we know that Italy uses it as a term of endearment and given that
Monaco is his protégé, I would apply the same logic [x]

Hey, so, before some wars in the 1700s, the French and
Spanish had A LOT more colonized land in North America than England, so in
Hetalia, wouldn’t that make France more of a parental figure? Before the wars
in 1700s at least. (I got this from my AP US History book)

Hetalia isn’t historically accurate, so it’s not the best
lens for analyzing relationships between the characters. Use the original
source material for interpretation (i.e., the manga).

I’ve done some posts that highlight the paternal
relationship that France has with America

[x] [x], but it still stands that England was
his primary father figure/ mentor. Even so, we know that because of England’s
long absences it was minimal.

Ex: America is jealous of kids who get presents from their fathers on Christmas [x].

Hello! Can you tell please in which period of
time strip “While you were gone” takes place?

I think it takes place
during the intermission period between WW1 and WW2. Both Lithuania and Poland
were independent, but Lithuania still warns of political tensions and the
likely possibility of Poland being targeted. Italy had also just gained his independence [x]

image

image

I’m very
sorry to hear that.

In the series, what
we’ve seen is that if ordered to, the nations will promote propaganda despite
not necessarily believing in it. This doesn’t mean that you can’t characterize them as you wish either.

Ex: Germany is
morally opposed to annexing Austria but is forced to [x]. In a later strip, he’s
seen promoting the annexation with other officers [x].

image

I hope this helps. All the
best, and thank you for sharing your voice and permitting me to comment.

I’ve already done posts on this subject. You can find them in my post directory [x] [x]

I’m blushing.

Sort of?

I’m in the top percentile for my grades (third and fourth year are mainly essays in social sciences undergraduate studies), but I’m also the type of student who never looks up from their laptop and doesn’t raise their hand. The only time the profs hear from me is if I have a rebuttal for the grade I received.

There’s one prof who I’m close with. He was the one where I incorporated Hetalia memes into the final paper and still managed to pull off an A+ in the class. That reminds me. I’m going to have to start making better relationships if I’m to hope for the possibility of reference letters…

It’s a complicated trajectory. My first introduction was in middle school where two cliques of girls were fighting over USUK and FrUk.

Misconception: He’s
an intentionally cruel character.

Reality: He’s
cognitively unaware of his cruelty+ his cruelty is described as child-like. In
other words, he’s doesn’t have the mental capacity to realize the repercussions
of his abuse. He was tormented and abused in childhood and subsequently
normalized it.

Ex: General Winter attacks him on an annual basis despite
offering protection [x]

Ex: He was conquered [bullied] by several nations when he
was a much smaller power.

image

Of course, this doesn’t aim to justify his actions, but it’s
important to understand that he’s not consciously malicious or sadistic in
nature. He’s characterized as a child-like adult that doesn’t have an accurate
perception of the world due to the trauma he experienced in his childhood. You
can feel pity for him without condoning his actions. Longer post on that here.

Multiple character notes corroborate this too [x]

Vol 1: “A gigantic
northern nation that has been tormented ever since childhood. At
the first impression, he seems to be a pure-hearted country bumpkin, and yet,
conversely speaking, he holds a child-like cruelty. Compared to other nations,
Russia’s history has seen more bloodbaths and tragedies.”

Vol 2: “He loves Vodka.
He has the simplicity of a country bumpkin and the cruelty of a child mixed
together.”

Vol 3: “A biiig, gentle,
and naive nation! He isn’t malicious, just extremely scary!”

Vol 4-5: “He’s
frighteningly innocent! + This huge northern country is giving off
a sense of oppression with his looks and his air of innocent scariness!”

I.e., in terms of mental
development, he’s remained as a perpetual child.

Misconception: He’s
evil.

Reality: Russia
isn’t good or bad. Someone who can’t tell right from wrong is incapable of
possessing morals. Instead, Russia often possesses good intentions despite the
disastrous consequences of his actions.

Ex: A repeated example, but the volume 4 character note
explicitly mentions that Russia isn’t a malicious person.

Ex: He thinks that anyone he meets is his friend.

image

Ex: He doesn’t realize that he hurts Latvia when he stretches
and squeezes him. He actually appears to kill Latvia briefly and remains
clueless to the pain he’s causing [x]

image

The only thing I would argue that Russia is conscious of is
the physical pressure that he puts on nations in order to get what he wants. I’ve
speculated before that Russia pushing down on Latvia’s head acts as a metaphor
for political pressure and suppression, hence the latter’s stunted growth.
Again, it’s like a child that knows what it wants and doesn’t tolerate any
deviating opinions.

Ex: Russia asks Latvia to help him build a railroad. When
Latvia refuses, Russia begins pushing down on his head until he complies [x]

image

Lastly, just like a child is capable of throwing tantrums,
Russia is the last nation you want to anger. He experiences mood swings that
are unpredictable, not to mention dangerous.

Ex: Russia naively believes that the Allies are his friends.
When Lithuania points out otherwise, Russia becomes angry, only to go through
another volatile shift in mood culminating in him feeling dejected.

image
image

Ex: He holds a covetous attitude towards nations that are/have been under his control [x].

image

Misconception: He’s hateful.

Reality: As the character note states, he can become “extremely
scary” if you do something he doesn’t like, but he’s far from hateful. He’s
known for his ability to forgive easily [x].

Ex: He dreams of living in a warm place surrounded by
sunflowers [x].

image

Ex: He loves children [x].

image

Just to prove again how unstable he is: he goes from
maternally feeding Estonia food with a bunny apron to threatening to assault
Estonia with a metal pipe—all executed with a smile on his face [x].

Misconception: He’s hated by all nations.

Reality: He’s feared and avoided for the most part. There are some notable grudges.

Ex: Although they’re not keen to be friends with Russia due
to the terror they experienced during the reign of the USSR, they don’t outright
hate him. They recognize that he’s unstable, and, therefore, can’t hold him
accountable for what he did. Instead, they keep their distance and still remain
fearful since this unpredictability hasn’t exactly gone away.

image

On the other hand, there are a few long-term grudges that
Russia’s held.

He and England have experienced several feuds, and it’s even
alluded to the fact that England is additionally wary of Russia because of a
dark presence that surrounds him. Longer post on that here [x].

Ex: England’s magical friends conveniently sense a dangerous
presence and flee right before Russia makes his appearance during the Halloween
2013-2014 Christmas event.

image
image

Another notable one is the grudge that he held against Japan.

Ex: Russian clergymen cursed Japan, resulting in Japan
panicking at the possibility of Germany forming an alliance with Russia during WW2 [x]

Bonus Facts:

He’s very rarely depicted without his scarf. Ukraine gave it
to him when they were children.

image

His heart has a habit of falling out of his chest.

image

His hair is blond in the manga [x].

He’s big-boned [x]

Why can’t people grasp the concept that America and Russia are capable of getting along with each other, EVEN during the Cold War?

I can’t speak for everyone, but generally a lot people
assume that political relations define personal relationships, when that hasn’t
been the case in the series [x].

It’s a weird concept to grasp if you’re just coming into the
fandom and haven’t read the manga, so I wouldn’t be so quick to fault them.

How come you haven’t done a post on Belarus?

It’s not that I don’t want to. A lot of the information on her is from an untranslated game Himaruya made and is inaccessible.

I’ve speculated before that her desire to marry Russia is likely in reference to a union between their states and her conception of showing this love is fairly normal, but then again, there are some really bizarre canon(?) bits of information that depicts this love as genuinely crazy on her part.

It’s from 2008 and although this characterization has clearly been abandoned, I’d still prefer to have an English translation before I comment on it.

I don’t think you realize the power you have. I was able to use your blog to convince someone that Hetalia isn’t what it’s demonized to be.

Oh wow! If only they
actually looked into the series too.

Don’t get me wrong
either. I’m not saying that Hetalia didn’t have its fair share of problems,
because it did. The shock perverted humour used in it was blatantly wrong.

If you want a real-life
comparison, it’s very similar to the whole Guardians of the Galaxy and James Gunn
situation. Those tweets were incredibly offensive and cringey, and anyone in
their right mind wouldn’t condone them.

Nonetheless, the
actors in the show were able to recognize that the humour of these ‘jokes’ were
made in poor taste, that they were used for shock value, and that Gunn himself
even owned up and apologized for them prior to the whole scandal. While the
tweets themselves weren’t condoned, they had the common sense to acknowledge
that Gunn wasn’t being serious about these jokes and that they were
unreflective of his true character.

Philip DeFranco on
YouTube did an excellent job of presenting both sides of the story if anyone’s
interested in drawing these comparisons. The only thing that disappoints me is that Himaruya merely deleted the content and didn’t choose to comment on it.
