Ooh interesting! I’ve often headcanoned Austria to be very interested in and educated on the topic of psychology. I can actually see him having enough knowledge and skill to become a psychologist if he wanted to.

One thing I’d love to expand on is how this factors into sexuality! I’m going to refer to Austria’s sexuality within his (more or less) canon relationship with Hungary so I apologize if that breaks any shipper’s hearts.

So! When we’re talking about anal retentive personalities and erogenous zones, there’s also the topic of what makes the erogenous zone pleasurable to the person. The, uh, anus is the site of these sexual needs and thus, ahem, “elimination” is considered to be the form of release needed to satisfy the personality sexually.

And that’s kind of what I see Hungary functioning as for Austria, a form of release. We all know their relationship is built on the “Uptight Loves Wild” trope and we’ve seen that Austria allows himself to relax, i.e. let go, when he’s with Hungary.

Think back to the Hetaween event where Austria spends the whole night being dragged around by Hungary in a skirt even though he’s super embarrassed. Considering how Austria reacts to Germany in the latest Hetaween when they’re trying to decide on a costume for him, we know Austria is easily embarrassed when it comes to his appearance and is sensitive about it in general.

My point is that Austria would not just let himself be in a prolonged, humiliating situation… unless the person he’s with enables him to give up some of that control and get rid of all that tension.

Now this is all very gross and kind of silly but hey, I didn’t make it up, Freud did.

Also, would you be willing to make this into a series where you exam other Hetalia characters in the context of Freud’s stages? I know you have a lot of requests all the time so don’t feel pressured or anything, I just love psychology and talking about it is fun!

Do you think you could elaborate on the Prussia is an echo/shadow of Germany concept?

Sure thing! Basically, as I said in my last post about
this, Prussia is like a paler version of what you would consider to be your
stereotypical German.

It’s almost like he’s
a shadow of Germany in the sense that although German himself, Prussia never
truly got to represent the German identity. He unified the identity into one sovereign
nation with the formation of the German Confederation and speaks the language,
but he fell short of representing it…LITERALLY.

It’s also said that due to malnutrition when he was younger,
Prussia didn’t get to reach his full height… or you can even say… potential. Even if he did represent East Germany, Germany has assumed
full control over the nation in modern times. Sometimes Prussia is seen
attending the World Meetings, but we don’t know much more than that.

It’s a common trope/ archetype for main characters to have a
shadow or mirror image of themselves. A character that is uncanny – something that
is strangely familiar, and yet different enough to make them distinguishable.

Yes, characters with Prussia’s coloration are often used as archetypal
villains in Japanese pop culture, but Hima’s already said that he’s changed the
direction and intentions of Prussia’s character (He was originally intended to be
a villain). Even so, I still think the contrast of opposite coloring between
Germany and Prussia was meant to be a juxtaposition, villain or not.

Although, just to be fair, one example where I know this archetype
is used is in the Japanese Legend of Zelda video game franchise. The protagonist,
Link, fights against a mirror image of himself – Dark Link. He has red eyes,
and is supposed to represent evil in opposition of the true Link’s pureness and
heroism.

However, while the contrast between Germany and Prussia may
have originally intended to be a villain-good guy distinction, it can possibly come
to represent polar opposites now. That is, new German identity and old German
identity/ heritage. Prussia is a fad, and Germany is the future of the German culture.

I just wanted to say thank you for contributing so much to this fandom! It’s hard work, and I find it hard to believe that you’ve updated daily for months now (I followed you back in August I believe) You’ve set a really good example too. You’ve done Hetalia right…. I wanted to message you this but I’m really shy.

No, thank you! This was a really sweet message. It made my morning 🙂 Yup, it’s added A LOT to my workload, but it’s totally worth it. Feel free to message me, but just to warn you, I’ve hardly been able to reply to people lately due to exams.

(And asks too, oh my has my inbox exploded…)

After that, I’ll get on top of things though! Unfortunately, I can only be on the internet for ten minutes at a time before having to log off and get back to work!

Hey I love your Hetalia theories! Do you think you could do one about America pretending to act childish and pretending to be a hero? It’s been shown that he only chooses not to read the atmosphere and he’s jealous of Canada’s ability to be liked. Do you think his personality is all an act? Maybe to hide his true thoughts or feelings? Is he smarter than we’re led to believe? And why would he act the way he does if it really is an act? Also, why is he obsessed with being a hero?

Yes, I can definitely do that, but boy is that ever a complicated answer. It’s actually relevant to a lot of what I’m learning though! Fair warning, this is going to be a very leftist opinion.

Anon 1: Oh definitely, I agree! The characters have so many contradictions, which is how nuanced and complex people are in real life. Although, AHHH! Thank you, but my stories are incomparable to his. I’m not happy with my writing, and have often considered deleting most of them. I won’t though, because people for some reason are still reading them, even the extremely cringey ones. If anything, I’m only half-satisfied with the last quarter of the Gay-OK cafe and the last two chapters of My Save Year :O

Anon 2: HAHA. Yeah, I have pretty bad OCD, so if things are left unfinished, I won’t touch them. I’m not even angry at George because of course life gets in the way of things. It’s just upsetting that an AU so beautifully crafted was discarded so effortlessly.
