Q & A

For those curious,
it’s 116 f or more up there. Yikes. I’ll take our 83 to 96 f later today. I
wanted to ask yesterday, but the ask box didn’t seem to
be connected to the server (at least that’s what it told). How do you think the
Republic of Ireland is related to the UK brothers? It’s not been stated they
are a sibling, or even a relative, so that makes me curious. Happy Canada Day
up there
šŸŽ†

[Thank you! The ask box situation has been fixed, but the
read more coding issue still hasn’t been resolved! I’m so sorry, but I can’t
always answer asks right away….]

Himaruya isn’t sure what to do with Ireland, so no relation
has been confirmed [x]. Thus far, we only know that England is the son of four
siblings, including Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland [x].Ā

If I’m to speculate here, they could be siblings if Himaruya ever decides to elaborate on the
character. Aside from historical relations, geographic proximity is
occasionally used as a defining factor for sibling relationships.

Given that Northern Ireland is England’s sibling and was originally
partitioned from Ireland, I don’t think this is too much of a stretch. Things get even
more complicated when you see that Northern Ireland is listed as England’s older brother… what a can of worms, eh?

Do you happen to know why people say APH
England doesn’t know how to swim? I’m pretty sure that was a joke in the comic
strips, but everyone seems to consider it canon.

Like you said, it is a joke, stemming from how British
people in horror films have a tendency of not being able to swim. I know I’ve
talked about this before, but my opinion has since shifted. I personally wouldn’t
consider it to be canon given the context [x].Ā

Which Hetalia character has the biggest amount of
ships/harem? Why is it that a lot of the characters can be shipped with everything?
(including fridges apparently).

(Fridges aren’t even the
brink of some of the madness in the fandom :P)

In my experience of
reading fanfiction, I would probably say England. He’s very versatile and fits
well in several dynamics. (e.g.,Ā FrUk, UsUk, AsaKiku, EngSey, EngBel, EngIta, and SpUk).Ā

People have different tastes; of course it’s going to vary.Ā

How do you think the Eastern European countries (Ukraine and
Hungary in particular) would interact with their Romas/Gypsies? What would
their relationships be like?

From what I can recall, there is no canon
depiction of this. It’s difficult to say due to the fact that citizenship in one country
doesn’t have meaning in their way of life.Ā

However, given that the nations
represent all people within their territories, including those of different
ethnicities, race, religion, and class, Hungary and Ukraine would personally treat them the same way as they
would with any other citizen, even if they don’t possess citizenship. Citizenship
is a social construction. I believe what’s more important is the fact that
these people live in certain jurisdictions.

I know you said Luxembourg was referring to Belgium and
Netherlands as older siblings are terms of endearment rather than him being
biologically related but, do you think he could at least be related to Belgium
considering that a lot of his former land now belongs to Belgium and their countries
have close relations? (sorry for this being long.)

(Please don’t be sorry!)

The corroborating source
I mentioned in an earlier post [x].Ā

The post [x].Ā

image

It’s complicated because
as I mentioned before, the Bamboo Thicket post and the corresponding Hetarchive
page state two different things. The post is listed as a rough
translation, but the fact that Himaruya refers to Luxembourg using terms of
endearment instead of directly confirming a sibling relationship to Netherlands
and Belgium in the question is pretty clear.

I don’t know what else
to say. If it doesn’t claim that they’re biological siblings, then they’re not. I’m not a translator and don’t speak Japanese either. Still, what I would like to look into more is why that translation is cited
as rough…

What are your favourite England and Japan moments? The interactions between those two are always amusing or sweet. ;D

Totally agreed!

1)Ā Ā Ā  The Anglo-Japanese Alliance

England not knowing
how to react to someone legitimately wanting to be his friend, as this takes
place during the Splendid Isolation period.

What this post aims to do is capture England and France’s
relationship at its most basic core. Contrary to popular opinion, France and
England don’t hate each other. There is a discrepancy in what they say and what
they do and feel, and that’s a critical point to understand when examining
their dynamic. What best exemplifies this is a character note from Volume 1.

England is stated to have an ā€œinseparable fight-friendshipā€
with France. In other words, the whole purpose of their relationship is
predicated on irony. The two ā€˜despise’ each other due to political ties and
personal disputes, while at the same time, they’ll also find themselves
inexplicably gravitating toward the other. Point is, even when they were
enemies, having grown up together, the two still hold a degree of familiarity that
has made them inseparable, regardless if they’re allies or enemies.

That said, I’ve organized their relationship into three main
themes. Let’s tie this back to the strips.

Rivalry:Ā Ā

Of course, I have to begin with what they’re most known for:
fighting and bickering.

The two grew up as rivals and continue to be rivals in
adulthood. Remember that there’s a difference between being a rival and an
enemy. Historically, France and England bounced back and forth between being enemies
or not but always remained as rivals [x].

When they were younger, the comic gag was that France
desired to conquer England, whom he viewed as ā€œuncute.ā€

While France did tease England for his hair and fashion, I
don’t think he realizes the extent that this has on England’s self-esteem.
England’s pride is too great to admit that France’s words affected how he
viewed himself, so it wasn’t exactly a topic that they brought up and discussed
openly [x].

image

Ex: England privately reflects on his lacking sense of refinement
after France mocks his sense of style.

image

Nonetheless, in the same strip, France still takes the time
to cut England’s hair, let alone compliment him, and reserves a matching clothing
piece for England to wear.

image
image

We also know that during the Norman Conquest, England became
a subordinate to France.Ā

Ex: England isn’t willing to admit to young America that
France used to cook for him during this period [x].

image

Another example that illustrates their rivalry well is how
France sided against England in the Revolution [x] [x].

image
image

What I take away from this is the differentiation between
the influence that politics has in the present experience of relationships
between nations versus the accumulation of history and experiences that affect
their personal relationships.

That brings me to my next theme.

Camaraderie:Ā

As mentioned, while England and France fight and bicker
frequently, enemies or not, they would still be considered to be each other’s
right-hand man. Their history together runs deep. The opposite’s presence is
something that has always been a constant in their life. It’s for this reason
that I believe they always find themselves drawn to the other in a variety of
circumstances.

Ex: In WW2 when he’s occupied by the Nazi regime, England
takes France into his home.

image

Ex: When he opens a maid cafƩ, England has no qualms in
proudly declaring the cook of the establishment to be French [x].

image

Ex: In Volume 6, we see France reprimanding and confronting
England on how poorly he raised America.

image

Misnomer:

Lastly, it’s no question that France and England declaring
that they hate each other is a misnomer. The discrepancies in their words and
their actions speak enough volumes to this.

Ex: When they thought the world was going to end in the year
1000, England decides to grant France’s wish and pretends to be conquered by
the latter.

image

Ex: In the middle of a brawl, France compliments the
material of England’s outfit, and, in return, England offers France a 20%
discount for the same material [x].

image

Ex: France plans to sightsee in England and asks England for
any hotel recommendations. While verbally refusing to give France the
recommendations, England still emails them to France [x].

image

Ex: In the well-known ā€œDream United Kingdomā€ strip, France
proposes to England after the Suez Canal Crisis wreaked havoc on their
economies. The intention was to establish a union between the UK and France [x].Ā

image

What’s always interested me is that even though England was
vehemently opposed to marrying France, his reason for not doing so wasn’t an
outright rejection. Instead, he claims that he didn’t want to marry France for
the lame reason of ameliorating their financial circumstances.

In sum, while France and England may be rivals and
extensively get on each other’s nerves, to only look at them in this light
would be to wrongly stereotype their relationship. The two have an interwoven
complex of friendship and rivalry; both components are necessary if their
dynamic is to be looked at in whole.

2)Ā Ā explain
fruk to the less enlightened pls

3)Ā Ā Hmmm…
Could you start a friendship series too? I think we all focus too much on the
potential romance between the pairings and not the meaningful bonds that they
share with one another. For instance, I would love if you could do a post on
Fruk’s friendship, a friendship that’s very underrated amongst the fandom. I
mean yes, they do fight like no other, but throughout the years they’ve really
formed a deep mutual respect, in their own way. Just, what are your top Fruk
friendship moments?

4)Ā could
you talk a bit about france and england’s relationship pls? I love your
psychtalia things!Ā

(Thank you!!!)

I’m going to cover Fruk from a friendship perspective, as I’ve promised before. I think it would be a good idea to go over certain relationships before looking at the easter eggs that slightly hint at romance.Ā

Post coming up tonight!Ā

A run-down of different perceptions
and common disputes over canon material.

Can England really not swim?Ā

It’s taken as a fact by
most that England can’t swim. On the other hand, some people are unsure whether
this should be considered canon given that Himaruya made the post in reference
to how British people in horror films stereotypically can’t swim [x].

Teenage Holy Rome?Ā

It’s a common
understanding that the Holy Rome that appeared in the Christmas 2011 event was
a teenager. The younger Holy Rome that appears in chapter 187 of World Stars
would then be a consistency error…

However, if you really
look at the 2011 version of Holy Rome, he’s too small to be a teenager/
pre-teen. Specifically, look at his size in comparison to Hungary as she holds
him.

image
image
image

His age in 2011
corroborates more with his age in World Stars than it does with old sketches
that depict him more clearly of being of a teenage age.

World starsĀ [x].

image

Old Sketch [x]Ā

image

There’s also the Private Concert strip where Holy Rome is depicted. He seems to match the ages of the 2011 and
World Stars versions [x].

image

Perhaps what happened
here is that Himaruya decided to make Holy Rome younger in later strips to
better fit some narrative/ plot that we have yet to see unfold.

Human Names?

The human names were
originally posted by Himaruya in response to a fan request. Since he deleted
the yahoo blog these were from, some don’t consider them to be canon despite
their popular usage.

Jesus Christ, you guys are super sweet. Thank you šŸ˜€

I would just like to point out that I’m going to be brief here. I’ve already covered this topic and don’t typically re-answer questions. I have a post directory and it’s your responsibility to read it along with the ask guidelines before you send in an ask! [x]

image

Anon 1: Any material that isn’t deleted is still canon, which includes the old characterizations, unfortunately.Ā

What I can’t stress enough is the use of discretion in recognizing that the way the characters are portrayed is far different now. Years of material have consistently proven that Himaruya’s learned from his mistakes and has grown as a creator.Ā

It’s just as wrong to hold on to previous characterizations asĀ ā€˜evidence’ as it is to completely ignore and deny their existence.

Anon 2: It’s not a DNA/ deterministic behaviour type of thing. My understanding is that it stems from custom and tradition.Ā

We’ve seen this before with America. How he behaves in world meetings goes against conventional norms.

image

Notice how Russia mentions that they’re [as in those nations who are older than America] are bound by tradition, (Together with Russia, Volume 5).Ā

image

From what I can recall, there is one instance where a nation goes against their bosses’ wishes.Ā

Occurs during the Anglo-Japanese Alliance Arc…

Japan claims that his bossĀ ā€œwent on his own accordā€ in speaking to Russia and apologizes to England, who at the time didn’t have good relations with Russia [x].

image
image

Anon 3: That’s one thing about Hetalia that’s a bit confusing. Its rules are flimsy and there are several exceptions. Perhaps with France the matter was the question of the legitimacy of the government.

Anyways, we do know what happened to him in canon.Ā He went to live with England after the Nazis occupied him (Volume 5,Ā LibertĆ©, ƉgalitĆ©, FraternitĆ© and…)
