Q & A

A good majority of the fan-fiction I read about
Belarus is about how she’s obsessed with Russia. Is there more to her than just
her obsession? I know she’s really really likes Russia but I want to believe
that’s not all to her character.

Honestly, no. Her
obsession is what shows up in most of her appearances. This doesn’t mean that
she can’t act normal, though. I have a post dedicated to showing that [x]. However,
even in the moments where she’s not hostile or aggressive, the gimmick still
ends up relating back to Russia.

It’s unfortunate, but
that’s just how it is. I’m still waiting for Himaruya to do something with her
character, as she’s only had one appearance in World Stars. It’s not even a
full appearance…

I’m not an expert or anything, but I think
Canada has some symptoms of having abandoned child syndrome (ACS) or something
similar to it. Almost any official story arc involving him is about how he’s
neglected by everyone, his own family too. Poor baby I just want him to be
happy D’:

Without a doubt, Canada
was neglected as a child, but it’s not to the extent of abandoned child
syndrome. I’m also iffy on your claim that he’s neglected in every arc he’s
portrayed in. In fact, a key theme of America and Canada’s relationship—which
is depicted in more depth in World stars—shows that Canada is actually taken
for granted by America. America relied on Canada to follow his every command;
Canada’s character development revolved around him learning how to stand up for
himself.

I’m always hesitant to
medicalize characters because often enough labels like abandoned child syndrome
are thrown around without any substantiation, leading to exaggerated and
inaccurate conclusions (very similar to false claims that Chibitalia suffered
from Stockholm Syndrome).

The only symptom I would
say that Canada does have is guilt and believing that he did something wrong/
something is wrong with him that caused the neglect + accompanying
feelings of depression. Otherwise, he doesn’t have clinginess, he doesn’t
experience withdrawal from social activities, he isn’t resistant towards
others, he doesn’t have any sleeping or eating disorders, and he doesn’t have a
problem with substance abuse.

Oh, and I’m not an expert either ^^

Hey,
why do you think Germany doesn’t share the same last name as Prussia?

I agree with Hetarchive’s perspective on this. They believe
that the last name wasn’t given in order to leave more ambiguity in the relationship
between Holy Rome and Germany. They also go on to point out that the founder of
the Holy Roman Empire was named Ludwig (actually Louis, but Ludwig is the
German name version of Louis).

Hey Ella, do you have a theory as to why
Veneziano and Romano call Rome grandpa and not father? Is it a term of
endearment like “big brother” or are they actually blood related? And
if so do you think there was another nation between them and Rome that would be
their parent but didn’t last long? I’ve been wondering about that since day one
😅

No theory needed. It’s confirmed that they’re biologically
related. Their descendancy is confirmed through a curl of all things. It’s used
to discount Romania’s claim that he’s biologically related to Rome in spite of
being largely influenced by the latter’s culture.

Based on what I’ve seen in the manga, I think
the grandpa label is interchangeable and they just used what felt right to
them. Rome was older when the two of them were born, so ‘Grandpa’ likely felt
more appropriate in spite of the fact that he was their sole parent figure.

Another example: Ancient Egypt had a more
youthful appearance, which could explain why Egypt refers to her as Mom.

Is it true that England once hired China and India
to cook for him?

Yes. It’s meant to represent their cuisine’s
growing influence in his country.

Out of context, it looks like a sitcom…

Q & A

image

Hallo Frau. Ellawritesficsometimes..Would you
be able to make a post on the relationship between India and China. Well I have
been researching about relations and have found that even though India and
China don’t have an amazing diplomatic relations they have a lot of cultural
relations such as cinnamon and fishing nets and also a lot of trade.

Sorry, friend. I can’t
make a post on that given that they’ve had one canon interaction. It should be
more, but that’s all we have to work with [x].

image

wait…I was going through your blog and I saw
you tag a post with ‘taiwan x ukraine’ what’s that about? keep up the good
work!

Mhhhmm.

I’ve made a post on
that. Taiwan has had some considerably gay moments. [x]. With Vietnam too.

America’s hero is
George Washington I will drown and die with this headcanon GLADLY goodbye-

Considering that Prussia sees Fritz as a role model and father figure, it’s not entirely impossible.

Here, have American presidents dressed in
steampunk attire.

Hi! Could you explain why
England didn’t want little America to call him big brother. I remember in an
episode he starts remembering spain, france, and his own brothers when America
asks if he can call him that. I didn’t really get why he was bothered by it.

I’ve already done a post on this 🙂 [x]

Hi, I hope I’m not bothering. I just wanted to say something
maybe obvious(??). With Genoa being a republic of its own as some kind of
city-state first and soon being brought in history to be part of the whole
kingdom of Italy in the unification, does it make sense that the
personification is still there as Genoa but the nowadays version? As an Italian
we have lots of stereotypes on Genoans (like with uhh every bigger city and
region and part of Italy) could that have changed its personality?

The personifications are
cultural personifications. It doesn’t matter if they aren’t official countries.
The word nation is a much broader term. If Genoa’s culture is truly unique and
the people there identify with it, there’s no reason for him not to be alive. We
just haven’t seen a confirmation in canon yet.

Anyways, this post fleshes out what I’m saying in more detail [x]

Q & A

Do you have a theory on Germania? It seems weird
that Rome is still his friend in heaven if he did kill him. Also Himaruya wrote
something along the lines “it’s ‘believed’ he killed Rome” so… he
didn’t really kill him?? Also he says they’re friends, but later says they hate
each other, with Persia and Germania being all buddy-buddy taunting Rome. And
why is he Prussia and Germany’s dad when Rome is a grandfather?

–  Yes, it is weird. You are right that the matter
of whether Germania really did deliver a fatal blow to Rome is left open-ended.
It’s neither a yes or a no.

– That’s also true. His character notes do tend to
contradict each other. I covered this more in detail in my characterization
post of Rome, although that was written after you sent in this ask 😊 [x].

– That last question isn’t necessarily true. The
relations between them is incredibly wonky. Germania’s referred to as both the
father and grandfather of Germany in different pieces of canon material. Search Hetarchive’s profile of Germania.

I genuinely learn so much more about the manga
after you analyze it and uncover those hidden messages that have been embedded
into Hetalia ❤ Any chance you know a little something about India and/or
Thailand? Thanks anyway!

I’m glad!

I do know some things and anyone can too if they search the relevant character tags on the English translation
of Bamboo Thicket, provided by Hetarchive! (ah geez, I sound like a
telemarketer…)

Not all information can be found on the blog, though!

Just for fun, here’s one
fact each.

India: He has
considerable stamina.

Source: Halloween 2011 Event, Hetarchive.

image

Thailand: He’s somewhere around 22
years old according to Himaruya.

Source: Hetarchive (Bamboo Thicket, eng trans., Nov 26th, 2010).

I got a question about the U.S. states. I
know they are not officially canon, that’s not what I wanted to ask. In the
sketch Hima showed what they’d be like, am I mistaken or did he confirm that
they would not be America’s children but his relatives, like Germany’s states?
And that they were all male (brothers I think the state shown said)? I may be
wrong though, it’s been awhile since I seen it, but my friend got into it with
me over whether it disproved the whole his children thing.

Note: Originally in my
State-talia post, I accidentally cropped and posted an image from the question
below in the same Q & A where Himaruya created a hypothetical dialogue with
the states. Nothing about the information I gave or said was incorrect (again,
total accident and you can verify in the initial reblogs to see that I haven’t
changed what I said), but the image was misleading (it had to do with computer
programs/software being personified). Still not sure how that managed to slip
past me
[x]

Anyways, no. They’re not personified. We got a dialogue of
what it would be like if they existed. There is no confirmation of their
relation. All we know hypothetically is that while some possess “mixed feelings,” they still “love America very much.”

Tbh, I don’t even know
where to start with this lol. This blog is pretty much dedicated to proving
that whole assertion, so I would recommend checking out my post directory 🙂

People have yelled at me before for me asking
for them only to give me proof for things, since i dont believe just from
someones word. No one ever wants to give proof and gets angry from me not
wanting to believe them until I get proof. So I’ll ask you, does Belgium have a
cannon nyo? And does France have a canon mother (Gaul i think it was)?

I’d suggest removing
those people from your life. If they can’t respect you, then they’re not worth
your time.

Belgium has a canon nyo. Just remember that the nyos that have made appearances in the manga don’t exist
in the same world. There is no canon Gaul. While it’s still not canon, Himaruya
has pondered over the idea of the Kingdom of the Franks being a parental figure to
France.

Q & A

Do You think that it’s okay to think in China,
India and Turkey as Ancients Nations. I don’t know if to be an Ancient, the
nation has to be old and had passed a long time ago.

There’s no explicit rule on what makes an ancient an ancient. I use a
rule of thumb and go by chronological age.

Yes, to China given that he’s lived for 4000+
years (e.g., he’s alive the same time as Rome) [x].

image
image

India, we don’t know enough information about
to pinpoint if he’s a more recent personification/ if he has an ancient
counterpart.

Yes, to Turkey too. In one of the drama CDs, it’s
revealed that he was the one who killed the Byzantine Empire (previously Ancient
Greece) [x].

Why does Turkey wear a mask?

No real reason is given. The
closest we’ve come to an answer only leaves us with more ambiguity… (Source:
Christmas 2007 event).

image
image
image

On the other hand,
Himaruya does play with the idea of the mask. He’s created posts, where if you
click on Turkey’s image, a new image of him without a mask will appear [x].

image

What do you think of Germanys character song Steady Rhythmus?
A lot of people seem to be confused because it’s rock/“metal”. Idk
why tho, considering that a shitload of Germans (including me) love those genres.
I mean, we have rock/metal bands and festivals everywhere :/

Not a fan of it, but I do get why it’s of that genre. I
actually kind of like Prussia’s “My song that is written for me, by me”, save
for some parts lmao. The instrumentals are good.

Would Prussia still be considered a nation, or is he now
human? If we’re ignoring the East Germany theory, that is.

The simple answer is that he seems to be somewhere in
between. He takes longer to heal, yet Gilbird is still around him. Since
the personifications’ immortality rubs off on their pet, Prussia may have still
retained some of his immortality, although it could be waning. Hypothetically,
if Prussia was human, being constantly around Germany—whom he lives with—would drive him mad [x].

The main reasons I say this are:

1)    He’s once referred to as being “in a pitiful state of an
enclave” [x].

2)    When asked if Prussia would eventually fade away, Hima states
this: [x].

Do you think that Italy is underestimated by others nations,
sometimes?

Yes and no.

Germany often underestimates him, being biased from what he
witnessed of Italy during the World Wars.

 Ex: Germany’s reaction at
the Galata Bridge scene where Turkey recalls how strong young Italy used to be (Source: Volume 4).

image

There are also moments where nations recognize that it’s
better not to underestimate Italy (Source: Christmas 2011 Event).

Q & A

Do you think America trusts his own gov?
currently only 18% of the us trusts the gov and the rest doesn’t. I’m not really
sure if they’ve gone over that in hetalia, the only time I can actually think
of one time were america was unsure(??) of his gov, is that one ep where he
finds Tony but his boss or gov tells him that he can’t tell anybody and that it
didn’t happen. Maybe I haven’t found anything yet or I’m just looking too deep
but yeah I was kinda wondering that.

It’s not clear on
whether he trusts them or not, not that he really has a choice on obeying them anyway. Nations are
forced to comply with their bosses’ orders regardless of their own will/
opinion over the matter [x].

image

You’re talking about the
Roswell incident where he was deliberately lied to about the UFO by his boss
(the president) and was instead told that it was a weather balloon. (Source: Assault☆The neighbor’s Roswell Incident.)

image

Because
that’s one of the minimal scenes where we see him interacting with his boss
(another example would be in the “Black Ships have sailed” strip), there isn’t
enough information to form a solid conclusion on what you’re asking.

@amuamoami asked: Are
there any other african (black) characters in hetalia besides Seychelles? The
only issue i have with hetalia is that I dont see much color diversity.

There
is color diversity (e.g., Ecuador, the Asian nations, Spain, and Portugal— not to be confused with race, which doesn’t exist in Hetalia).

Cameroon is the only other official black character with a full
design [x].

image

There’s an unconfirmed female who may or may not be an African nation that visits Seychelles in Volume 6 (most people speculate that it’s Madagascar due
to the use of third person in one panel).

image

Lastly, there were some “chibi head”
illustrations that appeared in Gauken Hetalia [x].

I understand your sentiment. On the other
hand, Himaruya does have a habit of travelling to countries before he creates a
character for them. There’s also the whole matter of how messy and complicated
it would be to try to depict the subject of colonialism intersected with race.
It would be pretty unavoidable if he were to create these characters.

What are your personal opinions on Czechia and Slovakia?
They’re some of my favourite characters!

They’re hilarious
together! I love them! Taken out of context, this scene is even funnier for
some reason [x].

image

image

There isn’t much to base
my opinion on, unfortunately. There are very few interactions between them.

Ex: They have tea
together [x].

image

Ex: India comes to
England’s aid after the American Revolution and heals the latter [x].

image

Do you have any particular mischaracterizations of Hetalia
characters that you absolutely hate? This can also include falsely portrayed
relationships and such.

Hate is a strong word, but I definitely get irritated.

People’s inability to reconcile the idea that
deleted material is deleted material and that the shock “perverted” humour used
in the past by Himaruya, while incomprehensible, is no longer incorporated in
the series. France, in particular, would be a prime example of this.

Do you have any hetalia headcanons for any characters? You’re always pointing out canon facts(thank you so much for that, btw), and it would be cool to see your own ideas and impressions on the characters :D

I’m not particularly big on headcanons, but I sometimes do charts like this 😀

Most insecure nations

America, Canada, England, Germany, Italy,
Romano, and Poland.

Loneliest nations

America, England, Iceland, Prussia, and Russia.

Happiest nations

Denmark, Finland, Seychelles, and Sweden.

Most sarcastic nations

England, France, Norway, and Romano.

Nations we need more of

Belgium, Belarus, India, and Vietnam.
