Note: This theory
makes the assumption that Holy Rome is Germany.  It also makes the assumption that Prussia evolved
to adopt the title of East Germany. I will also be talking about specific
evidence
in this post. For more detail and evidence regarding my thoughts about
the Holy Rome = Germany connection, here’s a slew of previous posts for that. It
includes things like memory repression, faked rebirth, the role of culture in
nationhood, and other similar goodies.

[x] [x] [x] [x] [x] [x] [x].

The Gap:

As I re-read the material, I’ve noticed something
odd that could account for the reason that Germany hasn’t come to the conclusion
– at least overtly – that he’s Holy Rome.

That is, there’s a significant gap in his relationship with
Prussia.

We know that post-WW2, Prussia ended up under Russia’s
control, working unprofitable jobs.

Source: Hetarchive, Notes & Etc.

We also know that Russia heavily censored Prussia’s communications
with other nations during the Soviet Era.

Source: Hetarchive (Bamboo Thicket, eng trans., Oct 30th 2013).

Ex: A letter that
Prussia sent to Austria was heavily censored by Russia.

image

If that’s the case, it would be likely that the two had very
little communication with each other outside of meetings. Even then, we know
that Russia attended meetings on the Baltic trio’s behalf, so that’s another
factor to consider if the same rule were to apply to Prussia as East Germany.

More importantly, this gap in communication is demonstrated
in more subtle ways too.

Ex: After the fall
of the Berlin Wall, Germany is surprised to find how tattered and rugged
Prussia’s appearance is (note the presumable East German car model Prussia uses).

Source: Hetarchive (Bamboo Thicket, eng trans., Oct 8th 2013).

image

Ex: Prussia also
talks about Ostalgie (a combined word illustrating nostalgia for East German life)
in another strip. Point is, it highlights that the brothers lived separately for several decades.

Source: Hetarchive, Germany’s Playing an Impossible Game.

“’We have to get rid of the “wall in out hearts,” so that the country can get better and the progress will be naturally more effective! When the Ostalgie level gets higher, Russia imposes himself on my big brother.”

image

Child of the Past:

Working off the section above, we also know that there’s a
lot of murky waters when it comes to how the series discusses Germany’s past.

For one thing, we know that Prussia has lied about stories
of his own past and that Germany took them at a face value. This scene in the
Christmas 2011 event makes us question whether Prussia may have lied about
aspects of Germany’s past as well.

Ex: Prussia’s account of Germany’s history starts from the
formation of modern-day Germany. He doesn’t delve past that, which is
questionable.

Source: Hetarchive, Christmas Event 2011.

image

We also know from hints in Buon San Valentino that Germany
may be suffering from memory loss. The basic gist of the scene is that Germany
gets so overwhelmed that he blacks out. The scene then pans in on his brain and
the next panels illustrate fuzzy images of Chibitalia as if Germany is
recalling a lost memory.

Source: Hetarchive, Buon San Valentino pt 3.

image

Another instance where Himaruya potentially plays with the
idea of Germany and memory loss is this panel here. It seemingly depicts him
having a fuzzy dream. What’s interesting is that this looks very similar to
what his other birth scenes look like.

The reason I bring up these examples is that if Germany
truly is an amnesiac Holy Rome, then at the time that Buon San Valentino took
place (WW2), he was consciously like a child compared to other personifications
who’ve lived for centuries and millennia.

Perhaps it’s for this reason that Prussia didn’t want to
tell Germany about his forgotten past, because it would be too soon and
traumatic to bring up.

Now factor in the gap and lack of communication between
Prussia and Germany post-WW2.

The question I’m asking and want people to think about: Is
it that Prussia still sees Germany as a child and hasn’t felt it necessary to
tell him these secrets? There’s also the fact that because it’s such a
personal, familial matter, other nations haven’t bothered to intrude and tell
Germany this themselves.

Not a passive
spectator:

Lastly, I just want to end on the note that Germany isn’t a passive
spectator in this equation.

While he’s quick to denounce anything that isn’t scientific –
e.g., discounting ghosts, such as Quintillus, a Roman emperor – I think at some
level Germany knows that not everything lines up.

What if he’s interested in looking at Roman history because
he wants to know his roots?

Source: Hetarchive (Bamboo Thicket, October 20th, 2014).

image

Or could it be that he wants to know more about Rome and how
he died and studies Roman history as an indirect way of approaching this?

Source: Hetarchive, Together with Grandpa Rome.

Notice how uncomfortable and unsure Germany looks.

This RARELY happens.

image
image

If there was another Holy Rome personification that died,
shouldn’t they be in heaven too…like Rome? Could it be that Germany is second-guessing
his status and realizes that just like how Prussia, Austria, and Hungary (to
name a few) have been able to adopt new titles regarding what they represent, the same thing occurred with him?

Or how about the undeniable fact that they look exactly
alike?

Q & A

image

Ok I’ve been thinking about this for a few
days. What do you think about the height’s of the characters? First I started
with the mindset of “I’m just gonna add ten cm to all Caucasian characters
this seems very unrealistic.” But then I remembered that Europeans used to
be like 20cm shorter only a few hundred years ago so now I don’t know…

I’ve already done a few
posts on this [x] [x] [x]

Based on precedent, the
height is dependent on the political and economic development of the country
and if the latter two are strong only then is the national average taken
into consideration. Aside from Prussia’s height, which is smaller due to
malnutrition, I do agree with you. I think a lot of the heights of the adult
nations we see depicted are based on modern figures.

Ella, do you happen to know what’s with the
“be the piano” thing? Is it from cookies-hetaoni? I mean, i’m afraid
to play the game so I don’t what it means. Have you played it?

I haven’t had the privilege
of accessing a copy (I’ve only watched playthroughs), but the “be the piano” thing is from the original version.
Canada tries to pretend to be a piano when he encounters one of the “Steves.”

Was Sweden ever confirmed as gay or was it just gay
for Finland? I’ve seen some debates about it and I’m just confused.

It’s complicated. Sweden was confirmed to be gay only for Finland in a 2007 blog post that has since been deleted. Most consider it be canon, especially because of Sweden’s continued and favoured interest in Finland (not as prominent post 2010)

Do what you will with the information. Unfortunately, it’s not a black and white answer [x].

image

Could you make a post explaining why PruCan
(Prussia x Canada) is a crack ship? No bashing though, it just kinda is, isn’t
it? Or maybe you will need to make a post explaining to me that it isn’t truly
a crack ship after all lol

I already did a shipping
post on that here [x].

I’m not a fan of the
word “crack” ship. It assumes that there’s a hierarchy where people are
obligated to justify their ships according to plausibility. Prussia and Canada
do have a canon interaction. I’ve noticed that it’s often been used as the basis for
the ship.

image

 Just wonderin’ why is America
so reluctant to not to be England’s little brother. Is it because he’s
resentful? Whats your opinion?

Again, not really a clear-cut answer, but this is my take on it. America refers to England as “onii-chan”, a title used to devote affection and adoration. England became America’s de-facto older brother figure.

America later rejected the label because he was tired of being infantilized and bossed around by England. He wanted freedom and considering England as a brother figure was associated with this lack of autonomy. I believe his rejection of the label ultimately boils down to the fact that he didn’t want to be seen as a child.

Q & A

image

Are Seborga
and Genoa related to anc.Rome too? Since They have the curl.

(The Italy brothers use a curl as proof of a
blood relation to Rome [x].)

By the logic vested in the manga, I would say
so. It’s similar to how Himaruya approached the German states. They were all
considered to be brothers.

image

In your opinion,
are there any secret/low-key stoner characters?

No one is confirmed to be a stoner lol. However,
Canada has smoked pot once.

image

Source: Christmas 2010 Event, page 5.

Although he’s never been shown to smoke pot in
canon (therefore it’s not canon), Netherlands would be another contender. There’s
a panel even depicting how some “coffee shops” in his country sell it.

Source: Bamboo Thicket (Eng trans., Hetarchive, February 24, 2015).

image

Is there
enough evidence to say that Prussia is an albino? Or Iceland or someone else in
the series for that matter

This is actually a mistake I’ve made in the
past in my own fics. Pale eyes and hair doesn’t automatically make someone an
albino, even though Prussia is sometimes depicted with characteristic red eyes—point is, it doesn’t automatically make him an albino.

Source: Christmas 2007, Hetarchive, page 5.

image

Canon evidence has actually pointed otherwise since
Prussia’s color scheme varies. He’s had blond hair and blue eyes, and his eye
color can range from hues of red, blue, and purple.

Edit: I’m aware that albinos can have blue/ purple eyes, but the fact still remains that Prussia hasn’t been confirmed as one.

slightly
personal question for mun: what do u think the most endearing trait of your
favorite character is?

 I don’t have a favourite character!

…The first character that comes to mind is
Finland.

He’s just a genuinely wholesome person that can
cheer up anyone [x].

image

Where did the
Netherlands and Taiwan ship come from? Is there any interaction between them in
canon?

There is no interaction between them.

I’m not favourable of the “they must have an
interaction in order to be shipped” mentality, though. People are free to ship
what they want, and they shouldn’t have to justify it based on canon material,
ya know?

Q & A

image
image

Not 100% sure, but
Himaruya has cited Osprey’s publishing work as his main source for military
uniforms [x]. If you would like more insight into the resources he uses, you can
skim through Bamboo Thicket. He lists dozens of the books that he uses as
history sources.

Side note: If
anyone’s ever wondering why some of the facts on the Roman emperors are a bit
off from mainstream understandings, Himaruya is really into new theories about
them that contradict traditional historical narratives.

Speaking of ancients, am I the only who thinks
it’s weird that Korea’s portrayed to be so young? I think the theory is because
of the division of Korea, but it kinda irks me when fans make him out to be
this immature little perv (I know Hima wrote him as such but still) because
Korea has almost 2000 years of culture and history; the fact that he’s seen as
“younger” than Japan is kinda wild too considering the south half of the
peninsula was the one to filter tech from China to the island.

No, I get that. Those choices were made in poor taste.
However, there’s also the possibility that Korea is second generation,
just like Egypt and Greece are with their ancient counterparts. It really
depends, because you also have Japan, China, and Turkey who don’t have ancient
counterparts,

Just laying out the possibility, but it’s important to note
that this hasn’t been confirmed.

Is the BTT a canon trio?

Their dynamic is, not the name [x] [x] [x].

Ok so I’m not sure
if America’s glasses are fake or real because I remember I was reading the
manga and he was talking to Canada and said “I tried wearing glasses how do
they look” (chapter 207)so that had to be around 1845 or early 1846 so if his
glasses are real glasses I guess he would start to need them as Texas became
more powerful. The stronger Texas is the worse America’s vision is and the more
he relies on his glasses.

He got them in an
unspecified period after his independence. However, given that they represent
Texas, I’m fairly certain it’s 1845 [x].

image

In consistency with the
rules from chapter 1 of world stars, France and England note that America’s
personality changed after he gained them (*title changes) [x].

image

They’re not real glasses,
though. In addition to representing land, they serve the purpose of a superhero
trope (e.g., Clark Kent taking off his glasses and becoming Superman) [x] [x]

image

image

They can eat, but I don’t recall them every being shown to
have any teeth…or any internal organs for that matter…[x] [x]

image
image

They have limbs and can produce flags.

image
image

Misconception:
She’s not a pervert or presently maintaining that she’s a raging pervert.

Reality: Old tropes
pretty much characterized her as a fujoshi. The latter has since been
discarded, although some, much tamer elements of it remain.

Ex: Due to the high volume of gay porn videos in her country,
Himaruya depicted her to be obsessed with “cute boys,” [x]

Later in the series, we still see her getting excited over similar
things, but it’s much in the same way that any girl fawns over a cute boy—butts,
abs, muscles, or in this case, a fan request steering Austria onto the topic of
underwear.

image

Misconception:
She and Austria hated each other; therefore, a romantic relationship between
them is impossible.

Reality: Hungary possessed
“defiant feelings” over being under Austria’s rule, but also held “complicated,
yearning-like feelings towards him,” [x]. Evidence suggests that they still have
romantic feelings for each other.

The point of differentiation here is how the nations are
able to separate their political and personal selves. How I interpret this is
that she was defiant towards Austria the country, not Austria the person
whom she lived with in the same house.

A further substantiation would be a character note claiming
that Hungary is fond of Austria because he was the first person to treat her
with kindness, as opposed to other nations in the past who treated her very
poorly (Vol 1).

Nonetheless, the two still fought a lot until they formed a dual monarchy.

image
image

As for hints of romance, there are several [x].

image

Ex: Austria ‘anonymously’ sends Hungary flowers for
Valentine’s day [x].

image

Ex: They spend their holidays together seemingly as a
couple. Prussia actually tears up at the sight of them, a likely mix of
jealousy and lamenting over his own loneliness [x].

image
image

Ex: Not necessarily romantic per say, but Hungary secretly
cleaned up after Austria despite their marriage (empire) having been dissolved.

image

Misconception:
She and Prussia hate each other.

Reality: 9/10 times,
they’ll be fighting, but they don’t truly hate each other. It’s more like they really don’t get along.

Ex: She’s said to hate Prussia due to him “making fun of her
hardships in childhood,” [x].

This bickering dynamic doesn’t go away as they mature [x].

image
image

Ex: They consider each other to be family during the
holidays. Of course, that doesn’t stop Prussia from finding an excuse to initially bar her and Austria entry into his and Germany’s home. He was just being an ass,
nothing more.

image
image
image

Still, this shouldn’t
negate the fact that they worked with each other on several occasions.

image
image

Strips even allude to the fact that Prussia has unreturned
feelings for her.

image
image

Misconception:
Hungary gave up everything for Austria and rendered herself weak and feminine.
In other words, she copped-out.

Reality: While
Hungary had a complex over settling down with Austria and feared that her
battle skills would get rusty, she did anything but cop-out [x].

image

Even though she bore stereotypical feminine household
chores, she still holds the title as the “manliest” country in the comic (Vol 2).

Ex: She didn’t hesitate to aid Austrian troops and kicked
some ass while doing so [x]

image

Bonus facts:

She used to represent an equestrian tribe [x]

She was raised to be like a man by Magyar and initially
identified as such. This only changed when she matured and realized
that she was actually a girl [x].

She and Romania get along like dogs and monkeys (the
Japanese equivalent of the saying “like cats and dogs”).

image
image

She’s described as a big sister-type (e.g., she acts maternally
towards Italy and Germany) [x]
