Memories of a Ghost by thesketchytype

Summary: An Hetalia fanfic (England X Queen Elizabeth I): During a world meeting, Arthur’s mind keeps skipping back to the 16th century, recalling a time when he accidentally fell in love. He remembers the happiness, the sorrow, the strength, and the anger he felt while standing by his dearest queen’s side. As he replays these memories, he comes to realize that there is another 8 at the meeting that felt the same joy and pain that he did for another woman.

Review: A fanfic that will stab you right in the heart, and will leave you craving for more. It does a nice job in exploring the nation/ human relationship, and will probably leave you in tears. Lots of historical references. Recommended.

Fic Reccommendations

A big thanks to @justanotheraccountpassingby
for submitting their fic recs and fantastic reviews!

1. It’s Raining Pizza

Author: APH coffee. [coffee is upside down] (SielOu)

Character: North Italy

Genre: Humour

“This fairly long flash fiction is a story based on an activity post conversation that contained a joke about Italy and pizza. Taking the joke, the author made a story out of Italy reacting to the sky raining literal pizza (hence the title). It’s simple, well-written, and funny.”

Found on Quotev [x].

2. The Adventures of Magical Strike

Author: miyukiku (miyukiku8049)

Characters (so far): Allies and Axis

Genre: Humour

“While I am reluctant to continue read this book, it does not deny the great effort of writing humour behind it. Amidst the confusion, I can’t help but smile at the silliness of the book itself. It’s not cringy silly, it’s funny silly.”

Found on Quotev [x].

3. If Only…

Author: Mairym (Mairym)

Characters: Allies and Axis

Genre: Historical

“One of my favourite if not favourite historical Hetalia works on Quotev. Currently on its starting chapters, it for now is about the events leading to World War II. The author adds not only the nations but their own characters via the regions (as shown by the French regions).

Poland’s chapter is my favourite and shows how well-written the story is, combining contrasting points of view (Germany planning to invade Poland and Poland walking around Warsaw) to create the atmosphere of suspense.Severely underrated.”

Found on Quotev [x].

4. Winter War and Operation Barbarossa

Author: TwilitEclipse (MasterAssassinInBlack)

Characters: (Winter War) Nordics and Russia (Operation Barbarossa) Russia.

Pairings: none

Genre: Historical

“The titles are self-explanatory of each story’s plot. They are the author’s take on those events. Told in third person, the author fully uses it to incorporate the facts while using it to build the characters’ experiences. Interestingly, they also tell the date and location of the chapter which at one point, was unknown. It gives the reader a sense of time and saying, “What happened?” and how so much can happen in a short amount of time.”

Note: Winter War is on summer hiatus while Operation Barbarossa is a short story.

“What do you think of the new strip?”

I think it’s very
interesting, mainly because it confirms earlier conceptualizations of
nationhood!

Since Monaco isn’t a big
country and has a small population, they mainly rely on tourists to sustain
themselves.

image

However, because the
country is resort and luxury-based (i.e casinos, hotels), it doesn’t attract a
ton of people, as not many people can afford going there.

image

Instead, it attracts for
the most part richer classes, both good and bad. What Monaco and France are
discussing here with regards to public safety is that the corrupt rich people Monaco’s
attractions bring in threaten the possibility of other people wanting to visit
her country.

When she says that she
won’t exist if she’s not safe, she’s basically saying that she’s nothing
without people visiting her. Likewise, because she doesn’t have a large
population, her existence is heavily dependent on tourists.

So, it would follow that
Monaco needs to dispose of the dangerous classes by getting rid of them,
therefore upping her country’s safety and making it a more desirable place to
travel to.

This strip echoes what
we saw back in chapter 307, where France confirms that their nationhood derives
from their citizens.

image

In sum…

A nation is nothing
without their people. But, because Monaco is tourist-based, they comprise a big
part of her population, albeit temporarily.

She “doesn’t stop
worrying” because if corrupt tourists with money keep visiting her, it can act
as a disincentive for other tourists to visit.

There’s also an issue
with expensiveness that she has to tackle if she’s to attract more kinds of
people to her country.

Found another ‘acknowledge me’ comic on Hetarchive!

Ella: Yes! I have this marked down in my notes too! Still, I really appreciate that you took the initiative and time to look into this. Thank you for your excellent contribution, it’s immensely appreciated 🙂

For those wondering where these panels are from, it’s in Comic diary 3, titled “A dream I saw once.”

The other strip that I cited in a previous theory is from Comic Diary 7, titled “No-Good Chibis 2.”

Given the fact that both strips were made relatively close to one another, you can tell that Hima’s really trying to emphasize this idea of repressed memories as a result of conflict and traumatic experiences in early childhood.

Remember that while Freud’s theories may be problematic in many aspects, the importance and relevance here is that Hima is very likely incorporating some of these concepts in his writing.

That’s why I’ll eventually be starting a “Psych-talia” series. You’ll find that a lot of the characterization of the nations falls in line with how Freud classified personality types, especially with regards to the five Psychosexual stages. I’ll try to keep it as simple as possible, though.

If you have a basic understanding of Freud, chances are that you’ll understand the motives for a lot of the nations’ behaviours and personalities. You especially see this with the Italy brothers, Germany, Austria, Hungary, England, and America.
